Closed Parenthesis

Digestive system held together
by enzymes and prayer,
the white horse in the foreground
seems content with its side of the fence.
Its face a metronome. Tail deep in grass.
The café has more flies than customers.
I have over the course of my life
held to various eating practices.
I avoid the word diet because
I’m a child of the seventies.
Cigarettes, Ex-lax, and Pepsi.
Startled pigeons are as likely to trot as to fly.
A muffled bark need not be a muzzled bark.
I can hear thunder but see no clouds.
I prefer sounds that are not words,
even when we bring our words to the cave.
Every strand bears so much weight.
Be sure to chew before you swallow.
